Anything by Frank Miller because it's written well. Anything by Alan Moore because the characters come alive. Illustrations by Bill Sienkiewicz because they capture the raw emotion of the scene. Most anything by Chris Ware because he understands pacing, framing, and drama---and also typography.

I have enjoyed Daniel Clowes books because Daniel captures teenage angst perfectly. "Clive Fans" by Seth is also well-written and illustrated. Graphic novels are a hybrid between a novel and a movie. They are inspiring for the escapism, the style in which they are drawn, the compositions, colors, and for their take on culture.
